Role of Technology is Spurring Student Achievement, Supporting Education Reform Efforts

Today’s U.S. Department of Education Daily Digest Bulletin in my inbox included a link to an educational event. Few of us will make it to Aspen to attend, but here are the highlights of one session addressing the role of technology by scaffolding student achievement, which in turn supports efforts in education reform. Although the presentation specifically addresses technology at the post-secondary level, I believe there may be clear implications for K-12 education. The opening blurb on the event says

U.S. Department of Education Chief of Staff Joanne Weiss will highlight the role of technology in transforming educational outcomes during discussions at the Aspen Ideas Festival this week.

The full event announcement can be read at the link below. Updates from this session will probably be added to the same general site area.

U.S. Department of Education Provides Guidance to Help School Bus Drivers Combat Bullying | U.S. Department of Education

According to the U.S. Department of Education, school bus drivers don’t feel they have the skills or knowledge to deal with bulling behaviors on the part of the riders. According to the National Association for Pupil Transportation, materials were published in 2011 that addressed bullying as well as other safety measures. Despite these efforts, 52.2 percent of school bus drivers feel unprepared to handle bullying.

High School and College Dropout: A Report from ETS and an Interview with Bill Gates

Earlier, I came across a post from ETS in LinkedIn. The post pointed to an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education that was an interview with Bill Gates on college dropout. At the end of the article was a link to an ETS R&D report on high school dropouts. Find the links to the sites here:

“As you enter the room, those already there watch you; they learn something about your professionalism, your openness, your style, your desire to be there, your energy.”

How do you enter a class, and what does it say about you?

Always Learning Something

As you enter the room, those already there watch you; they learn something about your professionalism, your openness, your style, your desire to be there, your energy.

As you scan the room before making your opening comments, they soak up knowledge about you; they learn your agreeableness, your enthusiasm, your hesitation.

With every word, with its intonations and inflections, with the comments you make, with the notes you put on the board and the far-off or engaged look when others are speaking, with the slight nod or slight frown as someone interrupts you to ask a question–there is no time when they are not learning.

This is probably the key underlying truth that drives all our other understandings, and all my other rules and tips, about teaching and training.  They are always learning something.  They may not–perhaps they are often not–learning “the material” or “today’s…

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan is touring the kicking off the Let’s Read! Let’s Move! initiative for the summer with a bang. From StrategyProfs.net. Via Marginal Revolution.

“By now, you may be getting sick of reading articles and blog posts about the crisis in higher education. This post is different. It proposes an explanation of why students have been willing to pay more and more for undergraduate and professional degrees at the same time that these degrees are becoming both less scarce and more dumbed down. And that explanation rests on a simple and plausible economic hypothesis.”
